Despite the recent discovery of a Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider, the Standard Model is limited in its explanatory and epistemological potential, which has led to a plethora of theories that try to extend or replace the Standard Model. It is remarkable that many of the motivations for physicists to search for theories beyond the Standard Model are of a philosophical nature. Even though the Standard Model has been tested to unprecedented precision, its epistemological shortcomings seem to have a very unsatisfactory character for physicists.
The Spring School will provide an overview of these and possibly other limitations of the Standard Model, fostering discussions among the participants of the school on these issues. It will also survey some of the most popular and interesting attempts to remove these limits from our description of nature.
